Lane splitting legal in CA?

I moved here from Oregon where I had a solid grasp on motor vehicle and bicycle laws, and I have a question. I know that "lane splitting" by motorcycles is (uniquely) legal here, but I'm wondering if that applies to cyclists as well? Both in Oregon and California I frequently see cyclists ride up the white line in a left-turn lane, for instance, or to the left of a right-turn lane without actually taking the lane. I used to do this myself because it makes sense and seems to hound motorists less, but I discovered it is actually illegal in Oregon.

Is lane splitting actually legal in California? Can you point me to a good web resource to research the laws? Please answer if you know for a fact whether it is legal or not, not because you've always done it and it makes sense.

Thanks and safe cycling!
Pete
