Ditch in sunnyvale a good route leg?

December 11, 2008 - 1:30am -- MJK

Does anyone know about this ditch in Sunnyvale between Java and Caribbean and Borregas/Bordeaux? I see someone on street view running along it but it looks like there is a sign saying no trespassing but then the gate looks very inadequate like it wasn't meant to keep bicycles and runners out.

Are you looking for a way to get north to the bay (biking or walking?), or to get through town? It looks as though the pavement is only for maintenance, and as a through cyclist you would have difficulty crossing the major roads like Caribbean, Java (especially the tracks), Bordeaux, and Mathilda. Maybe Borregas Ave would be an easier way to get wherever you need to go?

Just finding ways around the sunnyvale until the baytrail opens up. :)

I second Bob Sutterfield's suggestion of Borregas. I'd also suggest checking Sunnyvale's free Bike Map, available on the BPAC page linked below, and in hardcopy from the city.

That waterway is known as the West Channel. Looking into its potential use as a shared use path is an Action Statement in Sunnyvale's 2006 Bicycle Plan Update, which I wrote:

Policy BP.A3: Expand Sunnyvale’s network of off-street bicycle paths for recreation and utility cycling by facilitating bicycle access to the Baylands and along flood control channels.

Action BP.A3.a: Evaluate the feasibility of
developing the West Channel as a pathway throughout the Moffett Park area, including a connection to the Bay Trail.

Sunnyvale's Bicycle-Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) page is:

The "Bicycle Plan Update" link on that page doesn't seem to work today, but a search of Sunnyvale's website found the Plan here. As I recall, it's about 6.5 MB, not including the separate PDF containing Appendices A-F:
