can I convert wheel quick release

Can I convert low cost bicycles with quick release?

We are using several low cost bicyles, most purchased from Costco and other used second hand bikes. We like to convert the front wheel with quick releases, so that we can carry the bikes in our car trunks.

Can we buy those low cost quick releases skewers, many sold in Amazon.com, to convert our bikes?

Or, these quick release skewers must be custom fit for each different bikes? Is there a standard quick release skewers?
