San Carlos: Elm Street bike prospects, Holly Street/Highway 101 improvements, San Carlos Green

January 26, 2011 - 3:13pm -- colin

This San Carlos Area Report was written by Margaret Pye

In early 2010, a subcommittee of the San Carlos Transportation and Circulation (T&C) Commission created a draft version of a new Bicycle Transportation Plan for the City. Among other ideas, the Plan included the transformation of Elm Street (a main north-south route through the City) into a Bike Boulevard. Some City staff members thought this idea was too extreme, and feared it would result in controversy and opposition among City residents (including, but not limited to, Elm Street residents). Therefore, after its creation and approval by the T&C Commission, the Plan didn't proceed in the approval process (it would eventually need the approval of the City Council). The year 2011 may see the revival and final approval of the Plan. Some of us sincerely hope so!

During 2011, some projects that will involve the T&C Commission: Holly Street/Highway 101 interchange improvements -- the project study report is due fairly soon; various requests for stop signs all over town; bikeways on Old County Road; lane reconfigurations at the intersection of Brittan Avenue and Old County Road.

A group known as "San Carlos Green" (http://www.sancarlosgreen.org/) had been sponsoring a monthly Bike Buddies community bike ride; during 2010, interest waned to pretty much nothing, so rides were suspended. They are considering taking a survey to see if changing the day or time might result in more participants. Maybe the focus needs to change from "fun bike ride" to something more practical, like safety classes or lessons on how to repair your own bike.
