Which bike rack to get?

September 4, 2008 - 5:33pm -- maiki

We have had a lot of bikes stolen from our apartment complex in the last year, and I convinced the property manager to install a bike rack for us to use (we had been depending on the gates, which folks jump over to get the bikes).

Asking around I think we will need space for about seven or eight bikes. The neighbors are excited. All I have to do is make some suggestions to the manager and they will get it.

So, what are some good bike racks, and how much are they? We have a covered space that is about twenty feet wide. Are there any Bay Area retailers that sale bike racks with that capacity for around $500?

Standard bike racks are best.

I do not know prices, but I think that your $500 price request is going to be too low. It is very important to get standard racks that have been field tested. The City of Palo Alto has installed many "Inverted U" racks. They are simple and functional. Each inverted U will hold two bikes, facing in opposite directions.

I particularly like the "Lightning Bolt" rack by Creative Pipe

These are used extensively on the Stanford Campus. They are extremely easy to lock up to, are intuitive, and are efficient in terms of space utilization.

The City of Cambridge, Mass. has a good guide to bicycle parking
