Seems that trail segment is fenced in totally as 0f 1/14/2013 with a sign stating the trail will be closed from 11/12 - 5/13. The trail closed signs appear to be fancy shop made versions, not the typical temporary signs with "fill in the blank" from:____ to:____ dates, so apparently this is a big project. It appears from research that some sort of work may be going on to extend the trail from Cabrillo to El Camino and possibly some road work on San Tomas south of El Camino may be going on, but can't find any official notice of what is actually going on.
Also seems that since the trail was actually not closed until mid-January, the project appears to be about 2.5 months behind already, so the 5/13 end date is probably closer to the end of summer. Seems folks are starting to wonder what is going on:

I find nothing on the City of Santa Clara web site about the trail work, nor do I find anything on the vta.org site (regarding any Expressway work). Have also read snippets on-line about some possible box culvert work along San Tomas Aquino Creek between El Camino and Williams and that would be under valley water control, but nothing on their site either.
So if anyone has any information on what is going on, please pass along any pointers.
Thanks.

County?
I just replied to Mark on the other thread on this topic. If it's on San Tomas itself the jurisdiction is Santa Clara County - I'll call them to see if I can get some info. I too am wondering the same, as I am not entirely comfortable taking the lane there on San Tomas but that's what I'll do (timed so I'm buffering myself with a driver who sees me - sorry to them in advance).
If the work is on Cabrillo or the trail itself it would be the city, and I'll ping them too. I'm recovering from surgery but desperately wanting to get back to riding and I saw this from both angles while driving - definitely a "take the lane" scenario but not for the faint of heart (or weak from surgery, despite having the nerve to brave it).

Access to San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail from Warburton?
Looks like there maybe access to the bike trail from Warburton avenue as well (just speculating), but I do see some activity at the end of the field which belongs to the middle school on Cabrillo.
Big question is how do they plan to merge the lane at the El Camino/San Tomas intersection.

Not Sure
Don't know if you saw Kirk's reply to my questions on the other thread, but he spoke to the county engineer who assured him San Tomas X-Way will remain the same for those of us who cycle down it (instead of any trail spurs). IMO the southbound merge at El C is dangerous, and that's backed up by county and city stats, but time will tell if it's ever addressed with any widening and/or paint treatment. Kirk says they plan to widen the road itself to make room for two left-turn lanes. Yeah, like you I'm still wondering how you safely drop cyclists and pedestrians into an extremely busy corner where drivers will be looking in the opposite direction to time jumping into quick-moving traffic. That's the very reason I ride in the lane at that merge and let drivers move to the right of me (or stay behind me), per CVC 21202.

Trail closure
A sign at the new 49r stadium indicates trail closure 15 April. How long will the trail be closed?

Trail closure
Sign-age says that this detour will only be in place until the end of May, why does the website say an entire year?

Hi Chris,
Hi Chris,
The City says a year at http://santaclaraca.gov/index.aspx?page=50&recordid=2052&returnURL=%2fin.... I'm guessing "end of May" means May 2014.
