I am shocked to learn that in California one does not actually have t have a rear light when riding in the dark. That just does not make any sense. Isn't that a law that needs to be reviewed? Maybe there are other traffic laws for bicycles that could do with a review as well...

Looks like just a reflector is necessary, though I doubt most of them are visible from 500 feet: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc21201.htm
