Some companies make great neighbors

February 23, 2012 - 10:33am -- corinne

Some companies are simply good neighbors. First our members worked extensively with Facebook to get some bike infrastructure funding flowing from them to Menlo Park and East Palo Alto. Now Google has jumped in with some ideas on how they can help out the community.

Google's developers for their campus expansion originally contacted me last fall to get our input on the Stevens Creek Crossings Project (the EIR is now out -- http://www.nasa.gov/centers/ames/business/foia/Stevens_Creek_Crossings_P...). They plan to build on the opposite side of the creek from their current campus in the area adjacent to NASA.

In an effort to hear from the public directly, Google has partnered with us to host a public meeting on March 7th to discuss the Stevens Creek Crossings project. Even more exciting--they will also be gathering input on what types of infrastructure projects people would like to see funded in the area. There are no promises yet--but it's great that they are listening to the community and interested in enhancing bikability on the Bay Trail and on streets near their campus.

During the months when the Adobe Creek underpass (in Palo Alto) is closed, I bike commute right by the Google main campus on my way to the Bay Trail around Moffett. It is always nice to see how many employees make use of Google's bright-colored share-bikes to get around the sprawling campus. Way to go Googlers! I'm eager to see how the new buildings and bridges will evolve, and hope Google will continue with its green ways.

It would be nice to have the extension of the bike path parallel to highway 85 (currently ending at El-Camino in Mt. View) going all the way south to Hwy 101. It would allow cyclist go to the south faster and simpler. It happened only once 10 or more years ago when they opened Hwy 85 they allowed cyclist to go on Hwy all the way south starting from Stevens Creek in Cupertino.

but we need to concentrate on making the surface streets passable for the 8-to-80 crowd.

give us one, decent, dignified, protected, on-road cycletrack from downtown Mountain View all the way to the Googleplex -- just one -- for starters. then we can talk about all the off-road trails, etc. priorities.

Where can I find out details of the public meeting on March 7th? Thanks.
