I just relocated to the bay area and I need some help laying out a bike commute route.
I live near Snell Avenue and W Capitol Expressway in south San Jose and need to commute to Central X Lawrence Express ways in Santa Clara.
Any route suggestions or other thoughts for bike commuting in the area would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Route to Santa Clara
I go that way a few times a week it is pretty easy to follow once you have it down.
1 Take Snell Ave north and cross Capitol Expressway, stay on Snell and follow it around to the left until it becomes Hillsdale.
2 Turn right on Narvaez and follow it down to the bike trail entrance on the left and enter there.
3 At the end of this short bike trail make a left and cut under Hwy 87 then make a right on Canoas Garden.
4 Go up to the light and go right on Curtner.
5 Follow Curtner back under the freeway and go left at the light on Unified Ave. Follow it up and just before the freeway entrance you will enter the next section of the bike trail.
This section of the bike trail goes for a ways then passes thru the train station and ends at Willow Street where you will make a right.
6 Make your next left on Harliss Ave.
7 At the end of Harliss make a left on Virginia Street and in about 30 feet you will you will see the Guadalupe River trail (GRT) entrance on the right.
8 Follow the GRT up to Woz way where it will cut behind the Childrens Discovery Museum. Stay on the trail , it will go under San Carlos and Park Ave where it will dump out on Park ave.
9 Cross the river on Park ave to the continuation of the GRT and enter there, and follow it up to Julian St. There is a detour to the GRT here.
10 Turn left on Julian then right at the next light which is Autumn St.
11 At the end of the street before it turns to the left you will see the detour entrance behind Target. Enter there and follow it to the right back to the GRT.
12 Get back on the GRT and proceed under Coleman, Taylor, Hedding , and fwy 880 where it will dump you out at the Airport.
13 There is a 20 foot gravel section then a driveway where you can get on Airport Blvd.
14 Follow this road past all of the terminals and around to the back side of the airport toward long term parking you are now on Ewert Rd. Soon you will see an exit to Trimble Rd and Central Expressway.
15 Take Central to Lawrence and there you are.
It may sound a bit complicated but after a couple of runs it's a piece of cake. And the best thing is there are no stoplights or cars!
If you want you can meet me at Narvaez and Hillsdale and I can show you the way. Good Luck.

Unless there's a recent
Unless there's a recent change, the airport overpass is marked "No Bikes". If you choose to obey the sign, there's a path to the right just before it; take it, and when it ends, carefully merge left back to the main road.

I also work at the corner of Central/Lawrence (at National Semiconductor). I live downtown San Jose (on 6th St) - here is my most common route:
6th to Hedding
L on Hedding to Park
R on Park to Newhall
L on Newhall to Monroe
R on Monroe to Bowers
R on Bowers to Kifer
L on Kifer to Lawrence
Things I like about this route:
Most of the streets are relatively quiet
Hedding crosses under 87, with no on/offramps.
I cross I-880 on Park, where there are no on/off ramps.
Bowers is one of the best ways to cross Caltrain tracks in that area.
There are other, faster routes that I take sometimes, but this is the most civilized.
Another option would be to ride from Snell/Capitol to Tamien station, and take the Caltrain to the Lawrence station.
