route from san mateo to San jose (tasman and north 1st)

Hi,

I was looking for a safe route to ride from San Mateo to san jose near the intersection of Tasman and north 1st.

I tried google maps and it basically directs me via the bay trail, bayshore rd and some other city roads, which I'm not sure how safe they'll be. I was wondering if anyone has a better, safer and a tried and tested route between these two locations.

Thanks in advance!

One way might be to make your way down to industrial road, from there onto Middlefield, and to Downtown Palo Alto. From there, go to Bryant street and ride it until you get to mountain view's San Antonio caltrain and make your way onto Central. Ride that all the way to the San Tomas channel (not the street; a little bit after Great america).

Up the channel towards the bay and get off at agnew, ride it until you get to garrity and make your way across the neighborhood to Thamien park, over the guadalupe river. 1st and tasman is right around that area.

It'll be a three hour trip at the least. The bay trails are fine but they are dirt roads.

I have been riding from Redwood Shores to Santa Clara along the Bay Trail & enjoy it. I ride a hybrid bike. There is a little dirt but nothing that gets me too worried about my tires, and having a ride with very little auto traffic is always satisfying. One caution: the connection just south of Whipple is under construction, and seems to alter a little regularly. There is a short footpath (a few hundred feet, total) that you can ride or walk, and the footbridge on the south side has a steep drop! Easy to climb down but I'd have to be a wild BMX'er to ride over it. From there it's pavement for miles....

cheers,

what timing! I went through this afternoon and it's been paved, just since Friday! The ped bridge is still a drop, though I did see someone come UP that side on a mountain bike.

The only gravel bit, then, is if you choose to follow the trail behind Moffett Field. An alternative is to just follow Shoreline inland a little ways and proceed on Charleston instead. Try Google maps and ask for bicycle directions -- you can drag points on the route to avoid the bits you don't like.

Cheers,

today I saw someone go right over that bridge drop, land safely, and crash into the weeds on the other side! heh - all was well, he had a good laugh, but: what timing
