Routes from Cuptertino to NW Stanford campus

Are there any good routes?

Google Maps sends me along the somewhat uninspiring looking Foothill Expy:

Is this really an okay way to go? I'm not looking for the shortest distance, just something:

1) With not too many stops
2) Safe
3) Not crazy longer than the shortest route (I'd like to stay under 19.5 miles)

Any thoughts? Is this do-able in any safe way?

Here's what Google Maps suggested:

Foothill Expressway has
1) Not too many stops
2) Is safer, due to the smaller number of intersections than some slower roads.

You should also see tons of cyclists. :)

But, as on all roads with high-speed merging traffic, be especially careful when cars merge onto your road, as they may be looking back for traffic, and not see you in front of them. Get their attention before passing, and move fairly quickly to the right when safe.
