It will be my very first time riding on streets. I normally ride trails on weekends and I want to participate the BTWD. Plus, I always ride in groups too so riding on streets alone will be a big challenge. I only have 4.5 miles from home to work so I hope I can do it. I just have uncertainties on streets. Do you have any advise for me? Are you in my neighborhood, maybe you want to join my route ride test after work or on weekends? :)

I work near First and Brokaw, and have used these routes for lunchtime rides.
What kind of tires do you have on your bike?
If they aren't narrow:
You could actually head south on First, turn right on River Oaks, follow the ramp up, and head south (left) on the unpaved Guadalupe River Trail. Take this all the way into the airport, and make a left at the end of the trail when safe. It gets a little rough after the rental car bridge. This is Airport/Brokaw. (I've made this work with narrow tires, but it takes concentration/skill.)
If they are narrow:
Be careful when you approach Montague (south of River Oaks), due to many right-turning cars. You may want to move a bit to the left there. You could then go one more block, and turn right on Orchard Parkway, and take that as it becomes O'Nel Drive and Karina, and takes you back on First Street. When you are crossing Charcot/Guadalupe, make sure you are in a lane marked as straight; the rightmost lane's detector doesn't work, but you're not supposed to go straight from that lane.

re: riding on first/tasman to brokaw
hi paul,
thanks for your advise. i was planning on doing first street straight up to brokaw so i can pass by the energizer station posted by ebay/paypal. :) it would be fun to at least meet some of the riders before i go to work.
i have a mountain bike and my tires are fat tires. i don't think i'd ever want to be on skinny tires. haha i do trails/paved/off-road on weekends and it's all leisure rides.
i'm signing up with the actc academy too to learn more about cycling. i've never biked alone except around my house. :)
thanks again.
