San Jose Airport, New Terminal B, not Bike Friendly

I went to the new Terminal B open house at SJC today on my (small gas engine) motorized bike to see how bike friendly it is. I travel airlines domestically and internationally and have, at times, locked my bike in bikelink lockers to take lightrail/bus to the San Jose airport for trips. This was my first time actually biking into the San Jose airport. These are my impressions -

• 3 parking locations for bicycles, shown here http://sjc.org/travelers.php?page=parking/bicycle&subtitle=Parking+|+Bicyle+Parking . Lock your bike to the unattended upside down U-shaped pipes. The terminal A bike parking places are a long 10min outdoor walk across the street from Terminal B.
• Inside airport security area is not biker friendly. I have a motorized bike requiring two 8" crescent wrenches for flat tire repair (axle removal). TSA refused to let me bring my two 8" crescent wrenches through security. Too large, they said, although there does not seem to be a hard definition for what is too large. Three security agents suggested I leave them in my car, even though I had told each of them that I was on a bicycle. They suggested leaving my backpack, with wrenches, at my bike. They suggested hiding my wrenches outside the security area. These were obviously small standard wrenches with no blades, no sharp edges, and no dangerous points.

It was obvious that my discussion at the security area was degenerating without any positive result. So, I left without finishing the open house. During the long 10minute walk back to my bike, I suppose I could have hid my wrenches by burying them in the bark surrounding the plants outside. But, there was a security person walking around outside and I didn't want to answer any more questions as to why I had biked to the airport instead of driven.

So, thumbs down for the San Jose airport being bike friendly. The new airport terminal looks nice outside. But, drive a car there. Don't bike for the potential hassles you will encounter. Or just go to SFO with a $40 door-to-door shuttle and save biking for purely local trips that don't include the San Jose airport.
