Get SMART - Designing trains for cyclists

January 14, 2010 - 9:31am -- Carlos

Imagine being able to design you own airplane interior on your San Jose to Austin flight. Wider seats, more legroom, larger restrooms would be a start. Well, sorry but that's not going to happen.

However members of the community are being involved in the design of the new SMART train interiors. SMART which stands for Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit, will run 70-mile route between Cloverdale and Larkspur. Service is expected to start in 2014.

Who would have thought Los Angeles would be an innovative leader in changing the look of their streets. Southern California, a place that never met a freeway it didn't like, just may have a ciclovia event before San Jose (or peninsula cities as well). Read the article and let us know what you think.

As suggested in the article; How do we get more women, children and seniors to ride? What uses to you see for reinventing public streets and spaces?

Happy Holidays.

If not a ciclovia, how about a booklovia?

December 25, 2009 - 2:23pm -- Carlos

Recently National Public Radio had a news story about a section of Buenos Aires that decided on a different kind of book fair. Bookstores along the seven blocks of Corrientes Ave. closed off the streets in the summer, set up chairs, tables, and sofas and celebrated books and literature. While we tend to think of ciclovias as being for bicycles, any type of outdoor activity will do.
