Stanford Football (ranked no. 9 nationwide) just announced the first daytime game of the year: 12:00 noon on Saturday 10/6. It's a perfect opportunity to use the best (and greenest) transport mode in the world to attend the game! SVBC volunteers will lovingly safeguard bicycles at three bike corrals at the game. There is no reason not to bicycle to the game, and eight billion reasons to... read the whole blog post.
Wow! What an incredible ride and an inspiring group of people. I couldn’t have asked for anything more, and I did have my fingers crossed for no rain (success!). There were so many people with very different backgrounds, all with a common interest of making the planet a better place to live. It is no surprise then that many of the people who work in green energy, sustainability, and climate... read the whole blog post.
Our friends at Greenbelt Alliance are once again coordinating a Park(ing) Day event in downtown San José. Come join us and several of our community partners this Friday, September 21, as we reclaim public space!

Last week the whole crew at SVBC took a ride to check out the great new bike lanes that San Jose recently installed. To get there, we took Hedding from the Alameda to 11th Street. Hedding is a busy street that cries out for a bike lane. For me, not a really strong cyclist, the narrow lanes and heavy traffic are daunting. I probably would not ride it by myself. Fortunately, others led the way... read the whole blog post.
There are many harrowing jobs in this world. Fire jumpers, SWAT team members, USCG rescue divers all put their life on the line day in and day out and reap the satisfaction of a job well done. But can any of them match the devotion and satisfaction of being a bike guard? Thousands of alternative transportation advocates, on the front line of the climate change battle, entrust their precious... read the whole blog post.
Good news from last night's San José City Council meeting! The Council voted unanimously to approve a buffered bike lane along Hedding Street, between 15th Street and the Guadalupe River Trail.
Due to some resident complaints, a few blocks of the project will retain on-street parking, which means the lanes in that section will not be buffered. As a compromise, Councilmembers Liccardo,... read the whole blog post.
Next month, I will bike 320 miles from Fortuna to San Francisco as part of Climate Ride California 2012. The ride consists of hundreds of cyclists pedaling in a five-day ride to raise money for more than 30 green organizations that are working on sustainability, bike advocacy, the climate crisis, and clean energy solutions.
In order for me to participate however, I must raise at least $... read the whole blog post.
San Jose has just done something unheard of in Silicon Valley - the city converted car lanes on several blocks of 3th, 4th, 10th, and 11th streets in downtown, all busy one-way streets with 3 lanes in each direction - a total of 8 miles - to extra wide bike lanes separated by painted buffers from the remaining two lanes of car traffic. What's going on?
These bike lanes are just the... read the whole blog post.
Never quite able to stop thinking about work, Corinne sent me a text this afternoon (10:30 pm where she is), suggesting I share the above photo and point out that "even Galway, Ireland has cycle tracks and dedicated bus lanes..."
Okay, folks. How can we get a few dozen miles of cycle track installed before she gets back, in a week?
