City of Los Altos to discuss the future of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee
Jan 11, 2011Tonight the city of Los Altos in a special joint meeting will consider the fate of the city's bicycle and pedestrian advisory committee. The meeting is so special it will not be held in the council chambers but in the Neutra House (181 Hillview Avenue), a short walk away.
The city has scheduled tonight's joint meeting to discuss the issues. As I mentioned in a previous posting, many... read the whole blog post.
Alphabet Soup - The ABCs of BAC, BPAC, MTC, and TDA
Dec 20, 2010Regular readers of our website likely saw our recent post about the city of Los Altos considering whether to keep their BPAC (Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee). We appreciate your support in encouraging them to keep the committee. For those who may not follow advocacy issues so closely, I will attempt to explain what makes a city effective at creating safer bikeways, streets, and trails... read the whole blog post.
Eight reasons 2010 was a good year for SVBC
Dec 17, 2010At the recent Winter Party, our executive director, Corinne Winter, ran through a list of our recent accomplishments. At the risk of sounding immodest, I've compiled her main points below. Feel free to use these wins to badger your friends, family, and coworkers into becoming SVBC members. Or, use them as your own personal inspiration and make a year-end donation to your favorite San Mateo and... read the whole blog post.
Portland is Rail~Volutionary
Oct 26, 2010Portland, also known as Stumptown, Rose City, Bridgetown and PDX, became "Railtown" for a brief moment last week, when the city hosted the 16th Annual Rail~Volution under sunny skies and warm temperatures. The event seeks to foster greater involvement by public transit agencies in creating livable communities and linking to bicycle, pedestrian, and street networks as well as increasing... read the whole blog post.
Mountain biking - so fun, somehow controversial
Oct 15, 2010This just landed in the SVBC mail bag. It's a trailer for Pedal Driven, a documentary chronicling the battle between DIY mountain bike trail blazers and the government agencies tasked with protecting the federal lands being illegally striped with singletrack. Now, here at SVBC we strictly do not advocate the breaking of laws. We do, however, often work to get laws changed. In that spirit, I... read the whole blog post.
Creative ways to move by bicycle
Sep 20, 2010After the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition's recent move by bicycle it was only fitting that Clarence Eckerson would highlight cargo bikes in a recently posted video at Streetfilms. Although when I first heard about cargo bikes, the Dutch Bakfeit was the only thing that came to mind.
But in Clarence Eckerson's latest video he highlights some great ideas for cargo bikes; bars on wheels,... read the whole blog post.
Women talk about the benefits and joys of cycling (Streetfilms video)
Sep 14, 2010Although cycling is on the upswing in the South Bay, it has been a mostly a male dominated actvity. San Jose's Bike Party has changed this a bit with ever increasing numbers of women riders. SJBP has been an excellent way for new women riders to sample the joy of cycling and community with other women riders. July's Ladies Ride was a huge success with over 350 cyclists. For many this was... read the whole blog post.
Is cycling part of your economic recovery policy? Take our survey and find out.
Sep 09, 2010When cyclists get together eventually the talk moves to topics such as how much better they feel, how much weight they've lost, and sometimes how much money they've saved.
At SVBC we often advocate for more bike facilities based on the growing level of cycling in the area. But we also often mention that cyclists typically have more disposable (spendable) income in their pockets because... read the whole blog post.
Safest big city in America?
Aug 30, 2010For many years San Jose and others have touted that the city is the safest big city in America. This came close to home this morning while attempting to have an outdoor seat at my favorite morning coffee stop. While crossing in a signed crosswalk (complete with flashing lights) on four-lane Lincoln Ave., myself and another coffee shop regular were almost struck by a car that just passed right... read the whole blog post.
Building Our Future, One Step at a Time
Aug 29, 2010These are exciting times for residents of San Jose, but especially for the people who work, visit, and play in downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. As we all know, transportation improvements are coming to the Diridon Station area in the form of BART, High Speed Rail, the electrification of Caltrain, and expanded services for Amtrak, the ACE train, and the Capital Corridor. These... read the whole blog post.
