Meetings...

Mar 16, 2011

A lot of meetings today. First, met with CommUniverCity and SJSU Urban Planning professor to talk about efforts to promote biking and walking to schools located in the Five Wounds/Brookwood Terrace neighborhood in San José. As of now, we are planning a kids bike rodeo at Anne Darling Elementary School sometime in May, and also working on having students and volunteers host an Energizer... read the whole blog post.

Cycling in the Caribbean

Mar 16, 2011

I've just returned from a nice vacation in the Caribbean--thanks to the SVBC staff, board, and volunteers for managing everything in my absence! It seems I can soon look forward to retiring, as our staff is so capable.

Before I become entirely slammed with my inbox and other piles of urgency (I don't return to the office until tomorrow), I figured I'd share my experiences with... read the whole blog post.

Plus 3, plus bicycling, plus advocacy

Mar 16, 2011

Did you know that SVBC can benefit from every mile you ride your bike, every step you run, every stroke you swim, every hoop you make, every slope you ski? Basically almost any physical activity that promotes health, helps us. Plus 3 Network is an organization that partners private companies with causes and non-profit organizations like SVBC that seek to promote healthy, fun, and thriving... read the whole blog post.

Do you know the way to Niles?

Mar 15, 2011

I didn't either. And, it turned out, neither did the friends I was bicycling to Niles with. The description of the ride said we would start at Coyote Hills Regional Park, by the bay, and ride 9 miles up the trail to Niles, where we would stop for lunch before riding back. That was all. I had debated even about going, as 18 miles is a little far for me. But I decided to chance it.

Off-the-wall infrastructure: The Taylor/Mabury/Highway 101 overpass

Mar 14, 2011

Welcome to the first of my new series featuring the wacky, weird, creative, confusing, impressive, and depressing ways that planners try to accomodate cyclists, pedestrians, and transit users.

This week, I decided to start the series strong, with an example from my own commute: the Taylor/Mabury/Highway 101 bike/ped bridge!

'Tis better to have biked and lost...

A friend of my fiancée got his bike stolen a while back. It was locked up on the SJSU campus and he was away from it for about ten minutes while he peeked into her gallery to offer her a hand. It was also this man's birthday. Surprise - your bike is gone!

While getting a bike swiped on your birthday... read the whole blog post.

Good Public Transportation

Mar 08, 2011

This is about public transportation. Someplace else.

I am a big believer in having good, easy-to-use public transportation to help us get out of our cars. The problems and cutbacks we are experiencing here make me very sad.

I was in Boulder, Colorado for a long weekend. Every time I go to the Denver area, I am so impressed by the public transportation. First of all is the Denver... read the whole blog post.

Volunteer Open House - Good times & Good fun.

Mar 01, 2011

Thank you to all the great SVBC members who attended tonight's Volunteer Open House. It was great to see some new faces among the familiar. Normally at our Car Free Happy Hours conversation revolves around rides, routes, and commutes. Tonight we talked about ways to get involved in upcoming community events.

Bike parking is a big part of it. Whether its at Stanford football games, Maker... read the whole blog post.

Ready for Bike to Work Day?

Feb 28, 2011

I think I'm supposed to be telling people what I am doing at SVBC. Problem is, what I do is pretty boring: Paying bills, sending out invoices, updating payroll, making the deposits, working with insurance issues, writing letters, proofreading, getting supplies in, keeping up the files. Are you yawning yet? Yeah, not something anyone wants to hear too much about. But I do love the job. It’s an... read the whole blog post.

Childhood Memories

Feb 28, 2011

While participating at the Children's Discovery Museum's Biking in the City event last week, I got flashbacks of when I first acquired my first bicycle. It was a green Ninja Turtles bike with black training wheels. I remember the joy and freedom I experienced while riding on the sidewalks, in my back yard and at the park. As I grew out of it, I always shopped around for new bikes wondering... read the whole blog post.
