Summer Bicycling Workshops for 100 San Jose Youth + Free Bikes!

Summer Bicycling Workshops for 100 San Jose Youth + Free Bikes!

Bikes and sunny days: what could be better? This summer, SVBC partnered with the City of San Jose’s Fit Camp program to deliver fun, engaging, and educational bicycling workshops to youth throughout the city. Nearly 100 youth from six community centers gained knowledge and confidence as they learned essential bike riding skills through instruction, fun games, bicycle rodeos, maintenance workshops, and rides. Some of the top highlights from camps included a couple of rides through neighborhood streets and along the Los Gatos Creek Trail. Through this program, we were also as able to donate 18 bikes and 39 helmets to youth in most need, as well as provide a fleet of bikes for the Roosevelt Community Center to utilize in future year-round bike programs. These bikes were donated by Palo Alto-based software company TIBCO, who also enjoyed a fun, team-building day of building the bikes and getting them ready for the youth. We thank TIBCO for their generous donation of bikes and the City of San Jose’s Safe Summer Initiatives program for funding these workshops that kept youth active and engaged through the summer. Family Bicycling Fun

Family Bicycling Fun

Over the last two years, SVBC was able to offer and organize 20 free Family Bicycling Workshops reaching over 900 participants. From Morgan Hill to Half Moon Bay, SVBC partnered with community centers, schools, libraries, businesses, public agencies, and community organizations to put on educational, interactive, and fun Family Bicycling Workshops. These workshops incorporated information and activities about rules of the road, bike handling skills, ride planning, and even bike repair. In addition to promoting and encouraging safe bicycling for recreation and transportation, SVBC was also able to facilitate the distribution of 42 new and refurbished bicycles and nearly 300 helmets to those in need. Additionally, through a variety of partnerships with San Jose Bike Clinic, Bay Area Bike Mobile, and local bike shops, nearly 150 bikes were repaired free of charge. All of these free workshops were made possible thanks to a grant received from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s (MTC) Spare the Air Youth program. We look forward to seeking similar funding in the future to offer this resource to even more...
Books, bikes, and bands

Books, bikes, and bands

On October 18, 2014, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition partnered with the Public Libraries of San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and Mountain View to put on a family library-to-library biking tour. This event incorporated the fun of bicycling with the delightful resources Silicon Valley libraries have to offer. Each library site integrated fun arts and crafts activities, a library tour, and safe bicycling instruction prior to departing on a group ride to the next destination. The Sunnyvale Library greeted bicyclists with a live band, and the Mountain View Library also offered a bike maintenance station which provided free bicycle safety checks and minor repairs. Over 60 participants took part in one or three bike rides, which covered over 13 miles. This event was another example of how youth and adults can incorporate bicycling as part of a fun weekend outing. Special thanks to Michelle Rowic (2014 Bike Commuter of the Year), Emily Weak, Rachel Collier, Angela Ocana, and the many volunteers and library staff that made this ride...

East Palo Alto Family Biking Workshop

On September 23, 2014, Families from East Palo Alto gathered at Joel Davis Park to enjoy a day of bicycling and fun during a Family Biking Workshop and Bike Repair Day. Through a partnership with the City of East Palo Alto and the East Palo Alto Police Department’s Fit Zone, SVBC was able to lead a family biking workshop where adults and youth learned how to ride their bikes safely for recreation, transportation, and fun. Participants had the opportunity to get their bikes inspected by mechanics from the Bay Area Bike Mobile. Many bikes received a full tune-up, while others just had some air put in their tires. Many participants also took part in a 4-mile bike ride, and two lucky attendees went home with a new bike won through a drawing. Nearly 50 youth and adult helmets were also donated to those that needed one. These workshops are made possible in part by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s (MTC) Spare the Air Youth grant. Want a similar workshops in your community? Complete a request form...
Bike rides, bike safety, bike fun

Bike rides, bike safety, bike fun

Join SVBC’s Safe Routes to School team this Spring and Summer as we look to get more kids (and their parents) on bikes through interactive events and activities. Volunteering at these types of events is a great way to refresh your bicycling safety knowledge while having a great time. In the upcoming months we will host several biking events where we will teach kids safe riding techniques, proper helmet fit, basic bike maintenance, and most importantly, the fun of riding a bicycle! We will host an array of events where you may be able to volunteer and participate, including bike rodeos, family bike rides, community events, and summer camps. Take a look at the list of events we already have scheduled. Most shifts are between 2-5 hours long, but they are a full day’s worth of fun.
