Thanks to Laura Smith of the Campbell B/PAC for keeping us up-to-date on her city's bike and pedestrian projects.
The Campbell Avenue Improvement Project is almost complete! The bridge over Los Gatos Creek is wider, the pedestrian walk-way under Highway 17 is finished and road paving is done. All that remains is to put in place a few signs. They should be up sometime in November. The project turned out well improving both cyclists' and pedestrians' safety while traversing East Campbell Avenue.
The next big project is the Hacienda Avenue Improvement Project. The City of Campbell was awarded a large grant to help fund this project. Anyone who has cycled along Hacienda Avenue from Winchester Blvd to San Tomas Aquino Road knows how badly the road needs repairing. The City is considering a "Green Street" concept that uses more plants than usual and channels water away from the pavement so it can be percolated into underground water storage areas. Lights along the road would be solar powered. This is quite an exciting new approach to street construction and would make this portion of Hacienda Avenue both beautiful and environmentally sound. Once all the preliminary work is approved, the project should take 12-18 months to complete, hopefully in 2014.
Heads up - there is currently road work along Campbell Avenue from Superior Avenue to Fulton Avenue and bike lanes are closed. All work will be finished in November.
