Santa Clara County: VTA updates countywide plan

March 23, 2011 - 5:46pm -- colin

Work toward the Sustainable Communities Strategy has begun, and Santa Clara County residents have several opportunities to get engaged in the transportation element during the month of April.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is currently in the process of updating the Valley Transportation Plan 2040 (VTP 2040). VTA periodically updates this 25 year plan in its role as the appointed Congestion Management Agency (CMA) for the county. VTA will be displaying projects submitted by local agencies, cities and the community at a series of public meetings during the month of April.

The plan consists of location-specific improvements for modes of travel in six program areas: Highways, Local Streets and Roads, Expressways, Transit, Transportation Systems and Management/Intelligent Transportation Systems, and Bicycles. In addition, there are program areas that do not include specific projects including Pavement Management and the Community Design and Transportation Program. The Plan also identifies existing and future transportation needs through a systematic approach based on input from local jurisdictions, elected officials and the community.

For the first time, the regional transportation planning process will tie together regional housing needs allocation (RHNA) and regional transportation planning in an effort reduce greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with Senate Bill 375. This legislation requires the Bay Area region to prepare a Sustainable Communities Strategy as part of its Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets set for the years 2020 and 2035.
