The widening of E. Campbell Ave as it bridges over Los Gatos Creek (near the par course and Campbell Park). That particular stretch of road was a nightmare for cyclists. The road narrowed forcing the cyclist into the traffic lane. There was no bike lane or shoulder. (Unfortunately, the only other direct route east/west across the city of Campbell is Hamilton Ave. That is even more dangerous with all the traffic, merging lanes and Hwy 17 on/off ramps.)
The widening began on the north side of the bridge last summer and construction is underway on the south side. It is a hassle right now with the traffic back-ups due to lane closures, but the end result of a safer, wider bridge will be well worth it. The whole of E. Campbell Ave is being upgraded and the estimated date of completion is mid-spring.
Our next "big project" is to get portals along E. Campbell Ave. under Hyw 17 so cyclists and pedestrians have a wider, safer place to ride/walk. This is also a very exciting project. The feasibility study was presented to and accepted by the city council and an environmental impact study was submitted to CalTrans. Once CalTrans OKs the project, then the design phase can begin. Budget cuts and lack of funds are a big concern so its unknown when the project would begin (assuming it is approved), but PBAC has been providing imput for this project from the beginning. We are extremely fortunately to have city staff members who are strong advocates for cyclists.
