On this crisp December morning, the Santa Clara Safe Routes to School team led a Walking School Bus for Briarwood Elementary School-the theme was an "Umbrella Walk." The sun may have been out, but each breath of air condensed into a tiny, temporary cloud of white. Even with the cool temperatures, Briarwood Elementary students still participated in our walk and bike to school day.
Once at school, the kids who walked or biked wrote their names alongside their teacher's name as a way to calculate which class had the highest percentage of participants. Excitement and anticipation for the next Golden Sneaker bearer grew as each new name was added to the tracking board. The winning class had a whopping 33% participation rate. Every other class, with the exception of one, had students engaged in the event, choosing to say "no" to driving for the day.
We are looking forward to even more participation at our next walk and bike to school at Briarwood!
