Turkey Trottin' through Redwood Shores

Redwood Shores Elementary is the ideal school for walking and biking safely. The school is located in a pancake flat community surrounded by an abundance of bike paths separated from the main road. They even have a bike path that winds right into campus!

With such great walking and biking paths, it's easy to chose active modes of transportation. It makes it even easier when Redwood Shores Elementary has a dedicated Walking School Bus parent champion. Our Safe Routes to School team saw the potential of building the walking and biking program at this school even more. Since there are already weekly Walking School Buses, we decided to take it a step further and create themed Walk N' Roll Wednesdays once a month.

This past Wednesday, the first themed walking and biking day took place. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, the theme was "Turkey Trot." Kids were encouraged to bring in canned food for this "canned food walk" (even those that weren't participating were encouraged to bring canned food). The first 100 kids to arrive on two wheels or by foot were rewarded with a flying disc. The other walkers and bikers were rewarded for their efforts with stickers. However, it didn't stop here.

Large charts were put up for each grade. Participants put a sticker to denote their grade; grades with the most walkers and bikers were this month's winner of the Golden Sneaker.

Here are the November Turkey Trot results:
Grade................Total Walk/Bike................Total in Grade............................%
K...........................36...................................92......................................39%
1st.........................24...................................68.....................................35%
2nd........................19...................................74.....................................26%
3rd.........................25...................................73.....................................34%
4th.........................28...................................49......................................57%
5th.........................31...................................47......................................66%

Totals....................163..................................403....................................40%

40% of the school participated this month! The 5th graders are the clear winner of the November Golden Sneaker.

We are going to work on raising the numbers even more for next month.
